More than once, I've introduced two people and after the handshakes, one of the contacts just walks away. I have one associate who does this frequently. When I asked her about the reason behind the “meet-and-run” pattern, her response was “I don't want to interrupt or impose on you and your contacts.” This is likely the reason many people don't stick around to engage in conversation after casual introductions.

I recall one particularly uncomfortable situation when a contact entered a conversation to speak with me. After I introduced her to the person I had been talking with, she shook her hand and then vanished! We were both left feeling bewildered. To my original conversation partner, her abrupt exit was insulting.
